Part #2
Most of us have been aware of the use of essential oils in aromatherapy as well as their use in cosmetics, but what we may not know is that essential oils serve a much higher purpose. I came across a quote recently that said that wherever a poison is found in nature, there is bound to be an antidote close by.
We have been provided with the resources to support and maintain our health and wellbeing. We need only look to history to find that aromatic essences, fragrant oils, herbs and spices - nature’s medicines - have been a part of humanity’s search for health, wellness and wellbeing.
In today’s blog, we look at the different types of essential oils and share information that you need in order to make an educated decision for yourself and your family.
Aren’t all essential oils the same?
These days you can type ‘essential oils’ into a search engine and you instantly get bombarded with hundreds, if not thousands of articles and links. While this is great news for us, it also brings with it the need for discernment and awareness. It is so important that we do our research when it comes to our own health, and also that of our families and loved ones.
When it comes to essential oils, there are many different types and this is where research is important. According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference 1, there are four grades of essential oils that are produced today, let’s briefly look at the differences:
Synthetic or nature-identical oils - these are created in a laboratory. They are extremely common and can be found almost anywhere. They can be created quite cheaply and are sold at a low price - this should be your first red flag. These oils have no therapeutic efficacy and may even be harmful, the example shared in the Essential Oils Desk Reference is that 'fragrance-grade lavender oil may have a harmful effect instead of a healing effect on newly burned skin.'
Extended or altered oils - these are fragrance grade. These oils may have an essential oil base, but are ‘enhanced’ with certain lab-created constituents to increase volume or fragrance. Chemical impurities and imbalance between oil constituents may either be ineffective or cause negative effects.
Natural oils (organic) and certified oils - these oils pass oil-standard tests but may not contain any or may contain just a few therapeutic compounds. These oils focus on growing in a natural, chemical-free environment but are not concerned with exactness of the time of harvest and distillation in order to maximise the therapeutic potency of an essential oil. These oils can be labelled “100% Pure Certified” or “Natural”.
Therapeutic-grade essential oils - these are pure, medicinal, steam-distilled essential oils containing all desired therapeutic compounds. Young Living Essential Oils is the only company dedicated to the medicinal use and application of essential oils that is able to guarantee essential oil quality from Seed to Seal®.
